I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but during the renovations, our lab has been vacated to a box across the hall. Without natural light and fresh air I'm losing the will to live...
Also, if we open the lab door and look across to where our old lab used to be we see this:

So, yet more self promotion!
I'm currently involved in an outreach competition called Your Science Your Say where three scientists (Shane Bergin from Trinity, Ciaran MacanBhaird from Maynooth and myself) talk about our research in short, youtube style videos. These videos are then put to public vote and the overall winner is given a small grant. It's like reality tv, but with science.
This is part of an experiment to get the public involved in how research is funded and give them a taster of what's going on with science in Ireland. It's also been pretty entertaining trying to fit interesting science into a 4 minute video.
So how can you do a little bit to help?
Visit www.science.ie and take part in the online poll. The online poll will count for 15% of the final total.
And if you want to do a big bit to help?
The other 85% of the total comes from video votes. There are two ways to submit a video vote. You can visit the Science Gallery at Trinity College in Dublin and record a vote in the booth set up there. The other option is to submit a video response at the Your Science Your Say youtube channel. So if you're in Dublin and have some free time, or just feel like seeing your face on youtube, consider dropping me a vote!
More information can be found at the Your Science Your Say blog. Voting closes on 16th August.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- A measure seeking to commemorate President Bush's years in office by slapping his name on a San Francisco sewage plant has qualified for the November ballot.
The measure certified Thursday would rename the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.
Supporters say the idea is to commemorate the mess they claim Bush has left behind by actions such as the war in Iraq.

So, I keep sending friends links to blogs that I've stumbled across so I figured I might start reviewing them. I spend far more time reading blogs than books at the moment.
Today's offering: Things younger than Republican Presidential candidate (oh, and did I forget to mention war hero?) John McCain
I have to admit, I'm getting Hillary/Obama fatigue at the moment, so it's nice to read something based around the other side of the spectrum. Posts are pretty regular from what I can see, although it's only been going a few weeks. I guess post-election it will die out (if not before).
The idea behind the blog is that McCain was born in 1936 and, if elected, would be the oldest person to hold the office. The blog catalogs things that are younger than McCain. Some of my favourites include My Mother, Alaska and Both of Barack Obama's Parents.
From what I've seen so far, it's pretty amusing and a good way to kill a few minutes here and there. Edited to fix the links.

So, I was bored of a Sunday morning (well, afternoon), so I popped on to change.ie to use their calculator to find "my number" or the tonnes per year of carbon I use.
According to the website, the European average is around 8. Mine (and Stephen's, since we live together) is 1.06. They also gave me a target of 0.85. Ok, fair enough. I'm already at 1/8 of the average, but I guess I could do more. So I checked out their handy list of things I could do to improve.
1. Insulate the walls.
Not possible, since we rent. Plus they're already pretty good.
2. Lagging jacket.
Again, rental.
3. Have a shower instead of a bath.
We only have a shower.
4. Use colder settings when washing clothes.
Already do this, except for certain things which need to be washed at high temp.
5. Don't leave things on standby.
Again, already do this.
6. Move the fridge to a colder room.
Interesting. I think it's already in the coldest room, not that we have many options.
7. Install a low flow shower.
Rental!!!!!
8. Switch our desktop to a laptop.
Ok, firstly, I'm not sure if that would be more efficient. Our current desktop is quite efficient (it was built that way), much more efficient than the laptop I'm using right now. Anyway, laptops aren't great for long term usage, i.e. college work, gaming, hobbies, podcasting, etc. I know I prefer a desktop if possible.
9. Turn tv/dvd/stereo off and don't leave them on standby.
Um, is this not number 5?
10. In the summer, dry clothes naturally rather than in a dryer.
We do. We do it in spring, autumn and winter too. Should I also point out that as a hayfever sufferer, it's better to tumble dry to avoid getting pollen on my clothes?
Yup, 10 tips, not one of which is actually implementable. Oh well.

I wish to buy boots. In particular I wish to buy boots that will fit over my, apparently, giantess calf muscles. So, with my ill gotten gains (when I get them), I'm going to order these.

And due to the current exchange rate, the boots + postage to Ireland will only cost £135 = €169ish. Hooray!
I will review them when they show up just in case anyone wants to use Duo to buy stuff in the future.
That is all.
I don't know how to embed this video, so I will just link to where I found it. *incompetent*
